This cosmopolitan town sitting at the foot of the Alps and the Jura Mountains is known to be the center of fine watchmakers and the European seat of the United Nations. You may think that the city is just a stop along the way to your favorite French ski resort, but Geneva is ever charming with its medieval old town and museums, and its character stamped by the French "l'art de vivre", or art of living. The city is divided into two by the Rhône. The Rive Gauche (Left Bank) is the city's historical and cultural center, with the Old Town, university and the main luxury shopping street called Rue de Rhône. The Rive Droite (Right Bank), on the other hand, has 19th-century palace hotels and not that much charming business establishments. Lac Leman (also known as the Geneva Lake) harbors two other famous Swiss towns, Lausanne and Montreau, along its shores as well.
